reports of problems observed firsthand
Election systems aren't perfect. They need to be monitored. Problems need to be reported, corrected.

But like many tasks today, there are too few hands for the job. And the job is getting more and more complex.

You can help.

First, report any problem you encounter—during campaigning, voter registration, balloting, or any other time.

Second, publish your report widely. This not only alerts fellow voters to immediate pitfalls, it helps build a database for revamping the system.

Our Hotsheet lets you publish your report instantly—complete, intact, unfiltered—directly to fellow voters, troubleshooters, journalists, researchers, and other interested observers.

Oct. 30, 2010. Broward County. Election Observer from the Broward Election Reform Coalition noticed that all Early voting machines were opened for voting on 10/10/2010. The public testing of the voting machines was on 10/13/10 and early voting began 10/19/10. Broward's early voting machines were opened for voting before they passed the test. This poses serious security issues and is contrary to all logc.

Voter Alert:
October 26, 2010

Just spoke with an Aide from Park Summit in Coral Springs. She told me her friend went to the polls during early voting and her name could not be found in the Florida Voter Registration Database. I gave her the Election Protection Hotline Numbers
and told her to have her friend call them immediately as Lawyers are on staff to help resolve Voter Registration issues and help otherwise eligible voters cast a regular ballot or at least a provisional one.
I printed out this hotsheet for her to take with her and share with her family and friends.

2010 November Election: Questions the Press could ask about State Voting Systems

By Kathy Dopp

The press can help ensure the integrity of U.S. elections by asking election officials questions about the public verifiability of the accuracy of state election outcomes.

Hi Ellen,
I'm volunteering as a "voting machine specialist" for the 1-866-OUR VOTE hotline. I got a complaint to deal with from Broward from this morning that no one else has followed up on. The incident report says, "Voting machine is not working. The machine cannot read the ballots."

According to Verified Voting's Verifier, Broward uses DREs without VVPAT. This leaves me with a couple of questions:
1) Is that info up-to-date? I thought FL had gone all op-scan under Crist.
2) If it is a DRE, what "ballots" could the machine not be reading?

The precinct is J006 at 8300 NW 61st Street, Tamarac, FL 33321. Any chance you or someone you're working with could go down there and see if they're still having problems? I haven't tried calling the county elections office because I just don't think I have enough information to get them to do anything. I've put in a call to the voter asking for more info, which I may or may not receive.

P.S. You can view the incident report at

Since early 2008, it's been used by the Election Protection Coalition (EPC) to coordinate voter assistance efforts in several elections, including the 2008, 2009 and 2010 general elections. The website allows the general public a window onto EPC's election protection efforts by providing anonymized versions of EPC's records.
